My Approach

My approach is built on developmental theory, my professional experience, and a drive to support your child and family. I hold certifications in DIR/Floortime, Child-Parent Psychotherapy, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. The training and experience I have in these models guide my practice and I integrate these to create an individualized treatment plan that meets the goals you have for your child and family.

Therapeutic Services

Individual Play Therapy

Play is the vehicle by which children process and make sense of their experiences. It is through play that children communicate their thoughts and emotions. I will be your child’s partner in this work: I will follow their lead in order to develop their sense of initiative, create meaning of their play through narration, and provide a safe and trusting environment in which they can have the freedom to explore. In these sessions your child will gain coping skills, work on problem solving, and develop deeper insight of themselves.

Play provides you with a window into your child’s emotional life. You and I will work together to develop a deep understanding of their perspective. This can help you in supporting your child with processing an experience or moving through behaviors that are challenging.

In School Support

I offer individualized support for your child in their classroom or group setting to work on social interaction, self-regulation, language and communication, play skills, and other areas related to their classroom functioning. I collaborate with your child’s teachers and other school staff to provide modifications and adaptations to instruction, the environment, and strategies. This individualized support can ensure your child’s developmental goals are being fostered and they feel successful in their school setting. I will partner with you, their teachers, and others involved in your child’s educational plan (Speech and Language Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, etc.) throughout this process.

Family Therapy

The goal of this work is to support and strengthen the relationship between you and your child. This will be a safe space to problem solve and work through conflicts together. You will have the opportunity to explore yours and your child’s emotions within a non-judgmental and compassionate framework. You will gain insight into how your emotions and actions impact one another, and develop confidence in how your interactions can be change-promoting.

We will discuss together if there are other important members of your family that would benefit from being part of family therapy sessions (siblings, other grown ups, etc.).

Parenting Sessions

These sessions will provide you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of your child, giving you the tools and confidence you need to parent more effectively.

You may want to use this time to:

  • Process the meaning behind your child’s behavior and your own feelings when these behaviors come up.

  • Get a better understanding of where they are developmentally in order to best support their growth.

  • Explore how your parenting has been impacted by your life experiences, including the way you were parented, and explore your desire to shift the approaches that you find to be ineffective.

I integrate behavioral approaches during routines and interactions that you may find to be most helpful in supporting your child in shifting variations in behavior. Some challenges that parents may want to utilize  parenting sessions for are support with sleep, managing tantrums, setting limits, and more. We will problem solve together ways in which shifting your behavior can lead to change for your child.

I am trained in the Circle of Security Parent Training Program and the Triple P Positive Parenting Program. While I incorporate methods from my training into parenting sessions, we can discuss together if carrying out more structured sessions using one of these programs could feel good to you.
